Shihan-Dai
Tony Duarte
Shihan-Dai Tony Duarte began his formal training in
1984 in Tampa, Florida at Jhoon Rhee’s Tae Kwon Do, and
continued in 1985 as a student of Fu Jow Pai, Tiger Claw in
a Recreation center taught by a local Kung Fu Sifu for underprivileged
youths. For a few years, he took time off of his training to
concentrate on school to, playing football and join the wrestling
team. It was after graduation in 1988, that Tony moved to Miami
where he worked as a bouncer while pursuing his college degree.
It was during that time that a loyal student of Grand Master
Philip Chenique approached Shihan-Dai inviting him to a class
and promising that he would never be the same. Tony was awe
struck and has been a loyal student since.
As a victim of a near “fatal” motorcycle accident
in 2003, Shihan-Dai Tony suffered a fractured neck leaving
him somewhat disabled. Had it not been for the training received
prior from Dr. Chenique, Tony’s chances of survival
would have been less than slim. As a result and needless to
say, Shihan-Dai will always be grateful. Shihan-Dai Tony strives
one day to become a great master such as his mentor Dr. Philip
Chenique, and he wishes to share the Atemi-Ryu spirit throughout
the world.
Shihan-Dai Tony is currently a Fourth Degree Black Belt in
Atemi-Ryu Ju-Jitsu, and holds a First Kyu Brown Belt in Chendokan
Aikido under Dr. Chenique. Some of his accomplishments include
Armed Forces training at Ft. Bragg, N.C., instructing children
and mentoring them, tournament competitions, Law Enforcement
training, and daily group classes taught in all the Atemi-Ryu
affiliated schools.
